I was diagnosis with Parkinsons in 2002 and have lived with its progression.
I have read and re-read Davis Phinney’s book, “The Happiness of Pursuit” and find inspiration in it every time I pick it up. I had for years been active in numerous sports, including ironman triathlons, trail runs, open water swimming and other activities. Over time I have been able to do less and/or with the same intensity. It has been very disappointing and depressing. I keep a card with me all the time with a couple of Davis’ sayings, my favorite of which is: ” Over time, I have come to understand that Victory – that elusive electric moment of triumph- is not reserved to those who cross the finish line first”. I really believe that “Every Victory Counts”.
My wife and I have attended two Victory Summits, Jacksonville and Punta Gorda, and enjoyed both immensely. We found then both to be informative and highly motivational. I was very fortunate to be able to meet and talk with Davis at the Punta Gorda Summit. What a thrill and what an inspiration. THANKS DAVIS.
And thanks to the entire Phinney family for sharing Davis and their experience as a family with Parkinson’s with us in the Parkinson’s Community. Thanks also to the Davis Phinney Foundation staff and support personnel for making the Foundation the great resource for the Parkinson’s community that the organization has become.
Dick, I love that you keep a card of your favorite sayings with you for extra encouragement; how great that you were able to meet the man behind them! Thank you for your kind words about The Victory Summit events you’ve attended and our work to help people with Parkinson’s live well today. We hope to see you at another event soon!
